Li, Zhu, Kong, Han and Zhao (2018; arXiv:1811.03760) put an evolutionary attention layer in front of an LSTM. Attention weights over the look-back window are evolved with competitive random search (genetic-style select/recombine/mutate), not backprop, to avoid local traps. Beijing PM2.5, SML2010, MSR Action3D. Plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
Takeaway. Vanilla LSTM forgets which lags matter. EA-LSTM multiplies the sliding window by a per-timestep attention vector (W = (W^1,\ldots,W^L)), then feeds the weighted series to LSTM gates. Those (W) are not trained with Adam: a competitive random search (binary encode → champion subset → random select / recombine / mutate) ranks candidates by validation error.

LSTM already handles long memory with forget/input/output gates. What it still does poorly is importance sampling inside one window: lag (t-3) and lag (t-18) get the same first-layer treatment. Gradient attention (DA-RNN, Qin 2017) can stick in a local basin. The authors want a global search for the attention vector.
A 2018 LSTM + evolutionary attention paper, not a 2022 LTSF Transformer. Useful as the “why not just backprop the attention?” control before Informer / FEDformer.
If your evening LSTM overfits the last five bars, try a fixed weight vector on the look-back (even random search for 20 rounds) and plot which lags survive. That is the EA-LSTM homework without a GPU cluster.
Tiny evening exercise: NumPy vector x length 18. Sample 12 random W in (0,1], compute (x * W) into a toy 1-layer recurrence, pick the W with lowest val MSE. Plot W. Learning only.

Not investment advice. This Hub note is educational only. EA-LSTM’s PM2.5 and indoor-temperature scores are not a licence to trade equities or FX with an evolved attention LSTM.
