Zhou, Ma, Wen, Wang, Sun and Jin (Alibaba, ICML 2022; arXiv:2201.12740) mix seasonal-trend decomposition with frequency-domain Transformer blocks. Randomly keep a fixed number of Fourier (or Wavelet) modes so attention is linear in length. vs Autoformer: about 14.8% / 22.6% lower MSE on multivariate / univariate LTSF. Plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
Takeaway. Pointwise Transformer forecasts can drift in distribution (trend/frequency of the path looks wrong even if MSE is OK). FEDformer (1) decomposes trend vs seasonal with a mixture-of-experts moving average, (2) runs self/cross-attention in the frequency domain on a random subset of modes (keep high and low), complexity (O(L)).
FEDformer: Frequency Enhanced Decomposed Transformer for Long-term Series Forecasting (Tian Zhou, Ziqing Ma, Qingsong Wen, Xue Wang, Liang Sun, Rong Jin, 2022; ICML; arXiv:2201.12740). Alibaba Machine Intelligence. Code: MAZiqing/FEDformer.
Fit for learners: Fourier/Wavelet enhanced transformer — good next step after Autoformer for frequency-aware market forecasts.

Informer / LogTrans / Reformer made attention cheaper. They still attend in time. On ETTm1 a vanilla Transformer’s histogram of levels fails a KS test vs the history — the forecast “sounds” like a different series. Autoformer already decomposes; FEDformer adds sparse frequency mixing.
Read after Autoformer (paper 87); DLinear (paper 86) is the humility check that a linear layer may still win.
If your index series is seasonal + slow drift, attending in FFT space with 64 modes is a smaller evening experiment than full (L^2) attention. numpy.fft.rfft + a random mask is the FEDformer cartoon.
Tiny evening exercise: take a sine + linear trend, rfft, zero all but 8 random bins, irfft, plot. Then keep only the lowest 8 bins. Which reconstruction keeps the kink you added at t=200? Learning only.

Not investment advice. This Hub note is educational only. FEDformer’s ETT/electricity/traffic MSE is not a recommendation to trade with a frequency Transformer.
