Zhou, Zhang, Peng, Zhang, Li, Xiong and Zhang (AAAI 2021; arXiv:2012.07436) fix three Transformer LSTF bottlenecks: quadratic attention (ProbSparse O(L log L)), stacked-layer memory (self-attention distilling), and slow step-by-step decode (one-shot generative decoder). ETT oil temperature, ECL, Weather. Plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
Takeaway. Vanilla Transformer attention is (O(L^2)), stacked layers blow memory, and autoregressive decode is as slow as an RNN on a 720-step horizon. Informer: (i) ProbSparse — only (u = c \ln L) queries with the most non-uniform attention keep full keys; (ii) distilling halves the time axis each layer; (iii) decoder emits the whole horizon in one forward.

Fit for learners: Sparse ProbAttention for long horizons — useful when your Python backtest window gets long and slow.
This Hub note is a plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
LSTF = forecast much longer than the old 48-step RNN papers (policy / capacity planning). LSTM MSE and latency collapse past ~48 points on their transformer-oil example. Full attention cannot eat a week of 15-minute bars on one V100.
This is the 2021 LSTF Transformer that Autoformer / FEDformer / DLinear all argue with. Start here so the later papers’ tables make sense.
When the look-back in your notebook becomes thousands of bars, (QK^\top) is the first thing that dies. ProbSparse is “score a log-sized random sample of keys, keep the peaky queries.” You can prototype the max−mean score in NumPy before PyTorch.
Tiny evening exercise: random Q,K of shape (128, 8). Compute Q @ K.T, row-wise max - mean, keep top 8 rows, softmax those against full K. Compare MSE of attn @ V vs full attention. Learning only.

Not investment advice. This Hub note is educational only. Informer’s oil-temperature and electricity scores are not a recommendation to trade with ProbSparse attention.
