JAX for quantitative research after work: grad, vmap, and array thinking

Why this matters after work

You searched for jax for quantitative research. After a full day of work, you do not need a 400-page manual—you need a why-first path that fits one evening: understand the angle (functional array programs with autodiff for research toys), run a tiny example, and know what not to claim.

This hub article is educational only. Not investment advice. It will not pick stocks, size positions, or promise edge.

The evening angle

Tool focus: jax.

• JAX feels like NumPy with transformations (grad, vmap, jit)
• pure functions make experiments easier to replay
• start on CPU; chase GPU only after the math is correct
• autodiff is for models—not a license to overfit live markets

Toy code (safe, synthetic)

import numpy as np
try:
    import jax.numpy as jnp
    from jax import grad
    def mse(w, x, y):
        return jnp.mean((x * w - y) ** 2)
    x = jnp.array([1.0, 2.0, 3.0]); y = jnp.array([2.0, 4.0, 6.0])
    print('grad_at_1', float(grad(mse)(1.0, x, y)))
except Exception:
    x = np.array([1.0, 2.0, 3.0]); y = np.array([2.0, 4.0, 6.0])
    w = 1.0; eps = 1e-5
    def mse_np(w):
        return float(np.mean((x * w - y) ** 2))
    g = (mse_np(w+eps) - mse_np(w-eps)) / (2*eps)
    print('finite_diff_grad', g, '(install jax for real grad)')

Run it in a throwaway venv. If an import is missing, install only what you need for tonight—do not boil the ocean.

Practice loop (35–50 minutes)

1. Recreate the toy snippet from memory (or retype it—muscle memory beats copy-paste).
2. Swap synthetic numbers for a CSV you already have (public sample or your own research extract).
3. Write three bullet notes: what worked, what broke, what you will not automate yet.
4. Commit the script or notebook with a clear message—future you will thank present you.

Pitfalls

• Treating a tutorial metric as a tradable signal.
• Leaking future information into features or labels.
• Pasting API keys, customer data, or proprietary code into random tools.
• Upgrading five libraries at once when one change would isolate the failure.

What success looks like tonight

You can explain functional array programs with autodiff for research toys in two sentences, show one chart or printout, and list one risk. That is enough progress for an after-work session.

Next step

Tomorrow, connect this tool to the adjacent skill (data hygiene, validation, or a simple dashboard)—still educational, still not investment advice.

Educational only. Not investment advice.

Extra checklist

• Re-read the toy output and write what each number means in plain language.
• Note one dependency version (pip show) so you can reproduce tomorrow.
• Decide whether tomorrow is data cleaning, validation, or visualization—not all three.
• Keep a scratch/ folder; do not mix experiments with production paths.
• If something fails, bisect: data → transform → model → plot.
• Prefer official docs links over random blog copies when APIs drift.
• Time-box the session; stopping with notes beats a half-finished mega-refactor.
