Oreshkin, Carpov, Chapados and Bengio (ICLR 2020; arXiv:1905.10437) stack fully-connected residual blocks with a forecast/backcast fork. No TS feature engineering. Generic N-BEATS beats the M4 hybrid winner by ~3% OWA; an interpretable trend+Fourier variant stays within a hair. M3 and tourism too. Plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
Takeaway. You do not need Holt–Winters inside the net. N-BEATS is a deep stack of ReLU MLPs. Each block emits a backcast (subtract from the look-back) and a forecast (summed). Generic blocks learn the basis; interpretable stacks force polynomial trend + Fourier seasonality. Pure DL beat the M4 statistical/hybrid field.
N-BEATS: Neural basis expansion analysis for interpretable time series forecasting (Boris N. Oreshkin, Dmitri Carpov, Nicolas Chapados, Yoshua Bengio, 2019; ICLR 2020; arXiv:1905.10437). Element AI / Mila.
Fit for learners: Pure deep residual stacks that won M4 — clean baseline before you add finance-specific features.
This Hub note is a plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
M4 (100k series) crowned Smyl’s hybrid (dilated LSTM + Holt–Winters). Makridakis et al. read that as “hybrids are the way forward.” This paper asks whether residual FC stacks with no TS gadgets can win anyway — and whether you can still read trend vs season.
Use N-BEATS as the no-features neural baseline before you add volume, calendar, or a Transformer. (Later hierarchical-interpolation sequels exist; this batch stops at 95.)
If a 30-block MLP with skip connections beats a zoo of ETS/ARIMA on M4, your first weekend model can be FC + residual, not a 12-layer Informer. Interpretable mode is the same code with a frozen Fourier matrix.
Tiny evening exercise: two linear maps on a length-24 vector: one predicts length-24 backcast, one predicts length-8 forecast. Subtract backcast, feed the residual to a second block, sum the two forecasts. Fit with MSE on a sine. Learning only.

Not investment advice. This Hub note is educational only. N-BEATS’s M4/M3/tourism scores are not a recommendation to trade with a residual MLP.
