Challu, Olivares, Oreshkin, Garza, Mergenthaler-Canseco and Dubrawski (AAAI 2023; arXiv:2201.12886) keep N-BEATS residual MLP stacks, then add MaxPool multi-rate sampling and hierarchical interpolation so each block owns a frequency band. Univariate, shared weights. About 16% MSE / 14% MAE vs Transformer LTSF baselines, about 50 times faster. NeuralForecast. Plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
Takeaway. Long horizons make a vanilla MLP quadratic and noisy. N-HiTS keeps N-BEATS’ doubly residual stacks, then (1) MaxPool the look-back so each block sees a coarser sampling rate, and (2) predict only ceil(r_ell * H) knots and interpolate them to length H. Low-frequency blocks fire first. Univariate, global weights.

Fit for learners: Fast hierarchical interpolation heir of N-BEATS — great NeuralForecast library companion for long horizons.
This Hub note is a plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
N-BEATS already beats hybrids on M4 with ReLU stacks. Push the horizon to 720 and two things explode: memory (the last linear map is width H) and wiggle (every step is a free parameter). Transformer LTSF papers (Informer, Autoformer, FEDformer) attack the same pain with sparse attention. This paper asks whether pooling + interpolation on an MLP is enough — and cheaper.
Use N-HiTS as the long-horizon MLP after you have N-BEATS working — same residual diagram, two extra knobs (k_ell, r_ell).
If your evening Informer OOMs at horizon 336, a pooled MLP that interpolates 24 knots is a weekend-sized baseline. NeuralForecast already wraps it.
Tiny evening exercise: look-back length 48, horizon 24. Pool by 4. Fit a linear map from the pooled vector to 6 knots. numpy.interp those knots onto 24 steps. Subtract a backcast (same idea on the look-back) and stack a second block on the residual. Sine + slow trend. Learning only.

Not investment advice. This Hub note is educational only. N-HiTS’s ETTm2 / ECL / Exchange scores are not a licence to trade with hierarchical interpolation.
