Sentence Transformers v6.0 adds a fourth model type — MultiVectorEncoder — for ColBERT-style late interaction retrieval (token-level vectors + MaxSim scoring). The release absorbs modeling/training paths from PyLate and colpali-engine, with familiar encode_query / encode_document APIs and prompts for classic [Q] / [D] prefixes. Dense bi-encoders compress a passage into one vector. Late interaction keeps one vector per token and scores query vs document with MaxSim — usually stronger retrieval for rare entities / multi-clause queries, at the cost of a larger index. v6 makes that path first-class inside the library many after-work stacks already use.

Then skim the Migration Guide before bumping a production pin — v5→v6 is a major release. If you were on PyLate/is_query=True, map to encode_query / encode_document and move prefixes into prompts={"query": "[Q] ", "document": "[D] "} (per docs). Stop after printing the version and reading the guide once — no need to rebuild a full vector DB tonight.
