AutoGen is in maintenance—start with AG2 or Microsoft Agent Framework tonight; use AutoGen only as a migration contrast.
AutoGen (Microsoft’s multi-agent library) is now largely in maintenance. For new after-work projects in 2026, treat AG2 (the community continuation) or Microsoft Agent Framework as your main path—and open classic AutoGen docs only when you must read an old tutorial.
Docs: microsoft.github.io/autogen (legacy/reference) and ag2.ai (preferred starter).
After-work Python learners who keep seeing “AutoGen” in blog titles from 2023–2024 and need a clear 2026 default. If you already ship with LangGraph/CrewAI, skim this only for migration vocabulary.
Overview: Top 10 AI agent tools for after-work Python.
Pick one:
Do not start a greenfield project on classic AutoGen alone.
python -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
pip install -U ag2
# follow current ag2.ai quickstart if the package name differs on your doc version
Confirm with the import path shown in the current AG2 quickstart—not a random 2024 gist.
export OPENAI_API_KEY=... # or the provider AG2’s quickstart uses
Keep keys out of git. Prefer a local .env that stays ignored.
Copy the smallest AG2 “assistant + user proxy” (or equivalent) example from ag2.ai. Ask it one boring task: “Write a Python function that adds two numbers and return only the code.” Print the conversation trail once.
In NOTES.md, list three AutoGen blog habits you will not copy tonight (e.g. five-agent committees, GroupChat with no stop rule, pasting keys in notebooks). Contrast with what AG2’s quickstart actually does.
Change the task to: “Write def greet(name: str) -> str and a one-line doctest.” Stop when you have one clean function. If agents loop, lower max_turns / add a clear termination—do not add a third agent.
You leave with a 2026 map: AG2 or Microsoft Agent Framework forward, AutoGen as history/migration—not another abandoned half-setup.
