Build one Make scenario with Make AI Agent (New), one tool, and a manual trigger—then compare Zapier and n8n for after-work projects.
Make is a visual automation platform (scenarios on a canvas) with Make AI Agent (New) modules for tasks that need judgment on top of 3,000+ apps. Home: make.com. Intro: Introduction to Make AI Agent (New). First build: Create your first AI agent.
After work, pick Make when you want to see every hop. Zapier Agents is more chat-instructed; n8n is the self-host lane.
After-work Python learners who already think in flowcharts, and teammates who will not open a terminal. Do not start here if you only need a 15-line Python script.

Open make.com. Read the current Make AI Agent (New) help (the February 2026 app). Ignore 2025 screenshots of the old AI Agents tab.
Create scenario. Use Manual trigger or a Schedule you will disable. Do not start from a 20-module sales template.
Set instructions, provider (Make AI Provider is fine on night one), and one tool: a module you understand (HTTP, Google Sheets, or a tiny child scenario that returns text).
Upload one small file (your NOTES.md). Skip a 200-page PDF.
Use the in-canvas / testing chat. Inspect which tool fired. Then run the scenario once.
Scenario: manual trigger -> agent summarizes three public URLs you paste -> write the bullets to a personal Google Sheet or email yourself. Disable any schedule. No customer data.
You leave with a visible scenario: trigger, agent, one tool.
