Lim, Arik, Loeff and Pfister (IJF 2021; arXiv:1912.09363) build TFT for multi-horizon forecasts that mix static covariates, past-observed series, and known-future inputs (calendar, promotions). GRNs + GLU skip unused parts; variable selection names which features matter; LSTM does local processing; interpretable multi-head attention does long range; quantiles 0.1/0.5/0.9. Electricity, Traffic, Favorita, volatility. Plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
Takeaway. Multi-horizon forecasts are messy because inputs are three kinds: static IDs, past-only observations, and known-future calendar/promos. TFT is a Transformer that names those kinds, gates unused parts with GRNs, and emits quantile paths — not one black-box point.
Temporal Fusion Transformers for Interpretable Multi-horizon Time Series Forecasting (Bryan Lim, Sercan O. Arik, Nicolas Loeff, Tomas Pfister, 2019; International Journal of Forecasting 2021; arXiv:1912.09363). Oxford / Google Cloud AI.
Fit for learners: Interpretable multi-horizon TFT with variable selection — great for factor + calendar covariate forecasting in Python.
This Hub note is a plain-language intro. Not investment advice.
DeepAR-style iterated models assume every covariate is known in the future (you recurse the target only). Direct seq2seq (MQRNN) can dump a path, but static store IDs get concatenated like just another lag. Post-hoc SHAP/LIME ignore time order. Practitioners need (i) mixed input types, (ii) intervals, (iii) which variable / which lag mattered.
Use TFT when you have calendar + factors + an entity ID, not when you only have a univariate close.
If your evening model treats “ticker” the same as “yesterday’s return,” TFT is the architecture that splits those columns. Variable-selection weights are a debugging print, not a blog claim.
Tiny evening exercise: pandas frame with columns y, dow, is_month_end. Softmax three random positive weights; multiply the three (normalized) features; feed a 1-layer LSTM for 24 steps. Plot the softmax. Learning only.

Not investment advice. This Hub note is educational only. TFT’s electricity occupancy and Favorita sales scores are not a licence to trade equities or vol with a quantile Transformer.
